Hi Gerry and Alan, sorry I can't remember what mods I came up with and with my shifter I just used the original shaft and cut it down and welded the splined end to the arm in the box and I left enogh rod on the other side to stick out through the original inner gearbox seal. I'm not sure how our hosts setup works but there is no way I would consider removing the motor and box to fit a plug. What I would do in this situation is cut the end off the original shifter rod, file the cut end and poke it through from the gearbox side as per original fitment, through the motor and into the inner primary case. This then plugs the hole on the inner primary and the gearbox. Then I would fit a bolt, washer and nut into the outer primary to stop this shaft from moving out of the gearbox. You can then check in the gearbox side that the shaft has just come through the inner seal and you can then get on with the conversion. Either cut the shaft or bolt in the outer primary to length to allow the shaft to sit just through the seal. You have to get the position of the shaft fairly close to the original position so that the inner primary seal sits on the correct part of the shaft. Probably easiest to fit the outer cover with the new shifter fitted and with a piece of wire or similar, poke it through from the inner primary side untill it touches the inside of the shifter in the box and that will give uou the measurement to cut the original shifter rod. Sounds complex but isn't
