Hi,

I am thinking about buying a Royal enfield (Electra DL) this summer once I pass my bike test.

I read on a different forum about some success in adding a larger sprocket onto the bike (especially the newer EFI models).

The enfield has lots of torque which suggests that the engine is indeed powerful enough to increase the tooth count of the sprocket. This would increase the top speed without affecting the accelleration too much.

Does anyone have any practical experience with larger sprockets, preferably with an EFI model?

Would 21 or 22 tooth be OK?

No hope with the big sprockets 2 teeth up max which is bigest you can fit to EFI with kick start.

Danny, Norm has had lots of experience with the new models (not all of it good as I'm sure he will agree!) and I haven't but fitting a larger sprocket is not the only way to go. Have a look in the Accessory Catalogue on this site and you will see that you can fit a less restrictive exhaust system, a remapped fuel injection chip (Power Commander) and many other parts to make the standard bike go better. There will be someone along soon who has done these mods to explain the benefits I'm sure!

Danny, I think you may be getting ahead of yourself here. Pass your test then get a few thousand miles under your belt on your new Enfield. Then you will know what your requirements are. If you have money to spend you may find you prefer to address issues such as comfort or the appearance of the bike. Ride the bike over a reasonable distance and then you will know what it needs - I guarantee there will be something you want to change.

EFI is a good bike. Have had mine since 3 months ago, after 4 years on the old 2007 500. Advice given is very good. I have changed to an 18 tooth as recommended by my dealer in Germany, believe a 19 would also work, but best to get the engine well run in on the 17 tooth. I watched an expert make the change and it took a couple of hours and needed a big windy to remove the nut on the sprocket. Quite a bit more work than might be expected, you have to take the right side cover off, after draining the oil, disconnect some electrics, footrest off, loosen the silencer, remove the square cover in front of the air cleaner box. Could still use the same chain with 18t, but for 19t not too sure. Assembly quite straight forward but tricky lining up the casing and needs a rubber hammer to seat it home. Only cost me 50€, parts and labour, but he did it at the same time as my first free service and I provided oil and new filter. Good luck

I fully intend to ride the bike "as stock" for a while when I buy it, and was merely thinking ahead

I was looking at the bottle exhaust as well, which is supposed to give a marginal power boost.
I live in Ireland currently, and there is no bike NCT(MOT equivalent) in Ireland yet (so no emissions tests

I guess I was thinking that the sprocket mod was the best "bang for buck", since the exhaust or ecu remapping is more expensive.

Anyway, I would be stupid to ignore the advice.

Enjoy the Enfield for what it is a slower machine take the time to enjoy the ride stay of the the motorways and your bike will be feel right then after all that if you are not happy with the speed you could always buy some plastic surrounded Jap bike witch will cost a fortune to service a fortune for tyres and so on.take care
