I'm giving my engine new main bearings and I'm about to start on stripping down the timing side. My main concern is about the cams; is there a risk of putting them back with the timing wrong? Should I mark the teeth of the cogs or anything?

John, timing gears should already be marked with a series of dots. Make a note of where they are on the stripdown. The one on the worm on the end of the crank is often difficult to see so check it carefully.

John,
If you are sucessfull in stripping the motor down and getting it back together, setting the cams is the least of your problems, but setting the ignition timing will take a few questions here as it is a bit fiddly.

John, The fact that you ask this question means you are thinking ahead instead of just jumping in with the spanners. You'll be fine if you take plenty of pictures and/or notes. A good permanant marker is useful as well so you can mark componants as they come off the engine. A good big board is invaluable to lay things out on.

Thanks all. I am "filing" small, non obvious parts using one of those miniature sets of drawers you get from IKEA. I have already cocked-up by jumbling up the clutch plates but thankfully there is new set of technical notes to help with that!
I've done the ignition timing before when I fitted the Boyer.
Upcoming questions are likely to be around the crank - serviceability and /or replacement of the big end. Makes sense to take a look when I have the opportunity!
However with 67,000 miles on the clock, a standard piston and bore in pretty good condition, I think someone has been here before me!

John,
It has nothing to do with the ignition timing as you think,or experienced, it is getting the ignition gear in the correct spot and there are no marks to work from, but we are here to help talk you through it

Slightly confused about this as the ignition rotor has no Woodruff key- you just find TDC and take it from there. The timing gears can surely go back in any orientation?

John,
Wait untill you get to that stage and you will see what I am talking about and then you can ask the questions.
