Please could we drop the dead donkey, since the last genuine reference to Iridium was about 10 mails back. The site would benefit from not drifting off the subject but creating a new conversation IMHO

To accomodate your request to drop the extinct equine I note you quote NGK "give the gap as 0.028" = .711mm; so I guess you closed the gap?"

That is as maybe but the motorcycle manufacturer specifies 0.46mm - 0.50mm (.018" - 0.020")

Hitchcock catalogue says "Most spark plugs are set wider than Bullets need. Set to 0.020inch (0.5mm) with the exception of Iridium plugs which should not be changed"

Genuinely back to the iridium plug conversation, although I enjoy how these discussions go off track, its like being down the pub.
Anyway.... are these Iridei's (pleural?) actually worth the effort. I have always used a standard NGK BR8ES on the 1999 500 and it starts easily, runs perfectly, doesn't foul, is cheap and has been in there at least five years. I know in the catalogue Mr H says the Iridi has "A MORE EFFICIENT SPARK AND THEREFORE A BETTER PERFORMING AND MORE ECONOMICAL ENGINE" but he has his profit margin to think of and to pay the wages of all those nice people who's photo's greet me on the first page of the catalogue doesn't he? It's four times the cost and you can't even experiment with the gap by all accounts!

Time is irrelevant, 5 years could be 250miles, 2500 or 25000 or anything really.

Reading some adverts Enfields average annual mileage is pathetically small even with multiple owners.

Some seem to prefer spending megabucks on bling (turd polishing or putting lipstick on pigs) rather than a relatively modest amount on a few things that actually help an engine and it's cycle parts to perform properly.

Oh dear I seem to have indulged in tangentialism© The moderator will be issuing me with a stern warning to stick to the boring straight and narrow path or else

Not wishing to be a "kill joy", but I think threads should be connected.

I will desist further comment.

Cheers
