Hi, Hope someone can help. I have just been given today what i think is a 250cc Royal Enfield of 1938. (Box of bits, but told its complete)
It has the pressed steel forks, looks like a sidevalve engine.
Could this be a model D?
Has anyone got any photos or links to a website so i can look and see.
I did find a 1939 model D picture but this one has girder forks fitted.

Tony, I can only find the Model D listed for 1939 and then as the WD/D for 1940. As you say, girders illustrated but I know the pressed forks popped up on all sorts of models at this time, even the mighty v-twin K. The other identification possibility is the Model B from 1938 which fits the bill with pressed forks. These illustrations are in Gordon May's "By Miles The Best" available from Royal Enfield Books. Best identification is if you join the RE Owners Club, they have the Factory despatch records and can sometimes add some extra detail about the original spec of the bike. Hope this helps,

Thanks Mark, Just found a picture of a 1938 model B. I think that might be the one!
Now i need to find a colour photo, is the picture in Gordon Mays , By Miles the Best in colour?
If so i will need to buy the book. Anyone got one they would like to part with?

Tony, the book is in black and white, I've seen some of the original brochures and they usually had a colour cover and b & w pictures of the models, especially the less "top of the range" ones, I'm afraid! If you were a REOC member you could get your bike properly dated AND get photocopies of the brochures from the Archivist!!!
