Guys, Any thoughts on a decent battery??...I think mine is on it's way out. Ammeter shows +ve when riding, however at next time starting, the -ve deflection gets less and less each time. ? What would be good replcement for 1993 500cc Bullet

None of the above mean very much at all frankly.


Measure the voltage across the terminals using a voltmeter or a multimeter. If it is low then charge the battery and remeasure. Leave for a couple of hours and check to see if it is discharging.


Get a hudrometer and check the SG of each cell. That will tell you if one cell is failing.


Apart from your ammeter readings have you any other symptoms?


If this is a low mileage bike then remember the battery will naturally discharge over time. Fit a battery monitor which will top up the battery if the voltage drop.

Mike is correct. If you do need a replacement, MrH sells a gell filled one. He also sells ordinary ones but you need to get the acid locally which is a bit strange. You can get it from Tayna but will have to buy a battery from them at the same time. I'm sorry if disclosing that info breaks the rules, but who on earth would buy a battery without electrolyte?

As well as testing the voltage it's worth testing it with a load on (headlight say)


A good battery shouldn't dip too much but if it's on it's way out it will.

I converted to a smaller battery (LU/PUZ7A2) and the old type battery carrier. In the previous catalogues, from the pic, it looked like for 12 quid you got a new carrier bracket and box to accommodate said new battery. Not so. You only got the bracket, and then I had to buy the 'box' seperately. The picture has changed in the new edition after my dischuffment.  I ended up paying over 50 quid which was quite a wad just to replace the battery. Does look nice though.

t comes dry & you have to buy some Acid, That battery is Fine 2years on & still in use. (Though Now I have sold The Bike)


But I have Been Running My 350 (98) Daily Commuter Ride for years on Old 12v Fire alarm batterys from Work 12v 2amp H and have Had No problems at all, so a year ago Prior to my Tour of scotland , i bought a 12v 4.5 Amph Sealed (Fire alarm) Battery New for about £12 (No Advertiseing though) and a year later 6,000 miles On it is still going strong.


I Belive the Enfield Points Models Only require a Bit of Power,


And I have Had No Prob's on any of Mine , Even with Near Dead Battery's (Till Lights etc used) Still started good.

If you are keeping the bike buy a "Gel" type.
