Ive bent my baffle tags open as far as possible pushing them inward and right back on themselves so holes are fully open as far as possible and it sounds fine to me. My thinking was the more holes open the air pulses against each other the quieter it gets don't know if im right but it seems to work fine and its not loud to me. Maybe my hearings going but I tried a ride to work with the baffle out and it was dam loud and ear splitting. Its worth a try and it wont cost you nothing.

Hi. I fitted our hosts 'Goldy' full system to my Electra XS and it made a significant difference to the power output, but the noise was pretty extreme - guys at bike meets loved the sound and twittering of my bike but it was just too anti-social. I fitted Hitchcocks short baffle which made just a little difference to the sound level, but found the answer was to bend the tags to their fully closed position and wrap in fibre glass. This amazingly freed up more midrange torque (better back pressure?) and provides a lower frequency thump which is quieter and has passed two MOT's since!
My experiences anyway!

Seems the general feeling here is that the relacement silencers are too loud.

ARE YOU LISTENING MR H? I SAY CAN YOU HEAR US?
We like your exhaust systems, but just a little quieter please.
You may even find you sell many more. I for one would buy another if it was less anti-social than the last which, frankly, was unusable without attracting every plod in North Devon.

There is somebody local to me that has one of those megaphone types on his Enfield and it is really quite absurdly, stupidly, ridiculously loud. I would say it's less impressive and, if it was n't so silly, more comical.

Martin,
Didn't you realise that you bought that non-silencer for others to hear. Buy some ear plugs and leave it alone!

The guy who worked at Chells in Stafford when I took mine there for repair loved the sound and he also did the MOTs!!
He always took it for a test ride around the back streets.

Let it roar.

I only tried it with earplugs in as i have tinnitus and can't ride without them now.IT WAS STILL WAY TOO LOUD for my taste.I'll report back when i have the longer baffles and wadding.

Right-my new parts arrived in the week and i fitted them today -8 inch baffle and wrapping. The bike is now as quiet as a mouse (well a very loud one).I seem to have achieved the sound i was after at last.

Which do you think made the biggest difference, the baffle or the wrapping?
I see there are 12" ones on fleabay, I wonder is that a bit over overkill? Might be ok for our hosts free flow short silencers, got to be much better than the pointless 3 or 4 inch ones that come with them.

As i fitted the baffle and wrap at the same time i really couldn't say.I dare say the wrapping won't last indefinitely.I agree though 4 inches is not enough!12 could well make your ears water!

I'm not fond of loud bikes, my 860GT Ducati came with Conti's which set off car alarms as I rode past so I changed them for the far more moderate LaFranconi's the bullets though have my own home made burgess copies on and very minimal and simple baffling that works quite well. The baffle is a simple 6 to 8 inch section of pipe, that will interference fit into the tail end of the header, with one end sealed off and a series of 1/8" or 3/16" holes that through the miracle of pi (33/7) equal the cross-sectional size of the header. The smaller the holes the quieter the muffler it would seem. The current set up on the bitsa is a little louder than I would like but it does have a rather sporty crackle on the over run and anyway pulling it off might scratch the chrome so I'll leave it for the mo. The design I stole from a friend who copied the old AMC design.

Good suggestion, Simon. My 625 came to me with a Hitchcock Goldie fitted and it's far too loud. I might try your solution.

But, Pi = 33/7 ????

Surely not..........
