Fellas,

Once again you have been more than helpful! The thing with the clutch rod... is it as simple to remove as stated in the manual on page 27? Anything to avoid (apart from dropping bits in the gearbox? I'll have a go at this tonight and report back. I did start thinking it was a worn bearing but let's check the rod first.

Mike, I deliberately said "probably normal". We are talking about an Indian Enfield box here, in my experience a very slight hint of bronze, usually just visible in a strong light, IS normal in these boxes! Remember the fit, tolerances and material specification of the Indian boxes are less than perfect and a certain amount of " wearing in" is to be expected... And no problem about being controversial! If you want to see 'contraversial' then I'll post pictures of my bike with it's new front end once I have fitted it! Aiming for end of this month. Just a short trip to Japan to deal with first!

Well I have pulled the clutch rod and although I don't know exactly what to look for, it doesn't look obviously damaged - here is the best picture I could take:

I'm going to grease it up and stick it back in and perhaps it'll be better?

Speaking to a mate tonight about this and he has suggested pulling the primary cover of to see if anything has moved and might be rubbing against something it shouldn't, so I could do that tomorrow.

Hi Peter: How long is the rod? Is there a ball bearing in there? Maybe there is still the other half of the rod inside ?

My rod is approx 5". Once I greased it up and slipped it back in, she stopped complaining!

If the rod was in 2 pieces and a ball was beteen them, I would have thought that the part I removed had a domed end to fit the ball?

In any case the ride to work this morning was squeak and grind-free, and I think I have managed to adjust the clutch successfully this time!

Peter: I have a feeling that you have removed only half of the rod, the other half and ball were still inside, I'm not sure of the total length (who bothers to measure these things?) I think it should be about 9 inches. So if the noise returns, remove the other half of the rod and ball, maybe from the other side whilst leaning the bike over.
