 I am trying to remove the bearing cage from a Norton top yoke which has obviously been butchered to fit onto a 1A Inter The cage appears to have had a grinder play with it and the upper and lower cages have been rubbibg together even though the bearings were still in place. My question is, are these top yokes available because I feel if I continue with the press trying to get it to move I will end up damaging the yoke because boy is it in tight. I have had probably about 8 tons on it and no sign of movement

Norm, the best source for Norton spares is the Norvil Motorcycle Company (previously known as Fair Spares,) and you could have a look at their website. What the boss Les Emery doesn't know about Norton stuff is probably not worth knowing! You could also try Burtons, I'm pretty sure our Hosts only stock minimal spares for the Norton bits because they are so well provided for elsewhere.

can you strike it with an arc welder?

     I arc welded a slug into the bottom so I had something to press on but no joy, it just breaks the weld out at about the 8 ton mark, but it gets much worse, I just had a look at the bottom yoke and the bearing cage has been welded to the yoke. Enfield must have had special yokes made for the Series 2's because this is obviously a botch up job. The Series 2 I can compare it to is an hours ride away and I was hoping to do these forks tomorrow.

Norm, the Norton forks used on the S2 are a variation on the "short" Roadholders fitted to the Norton P15 Ranger and Matchless G15 "Desert Sled" bikes for the American market. These are highly sought after but I think parts are still available. Another possible supplier is Russell Motors of Clapham Junction, London who are specialists in these models as well as ex-WD AMC stuff.

       The forks are ok, it is just the top and bottom yokes we will need. I don't know if they were Enfield specific or if the diameter of the forks differ from the Roadholders

Back in the day we used to get stubborn inner races out of their recess by running a generous arc all the way round the wearing face, as the weld cooled and shrank it pulled the race with it and the race usually fell out.


90% + success rate as I recall.


This won't be too helpful for the one that's welded in obviously.

Norm, it's the whole fork assembly. I think there are some minor differences of headlight brackets perhaps but the yokes and stanchions etc are all G15. Go to Norvil.

If our hosts can't help I've always found RGM or Mick Hemmings much more helpful and cheaper than Norvil.


Mr Emery is also "not interested in keeping Matchless or Enfield on the road"

Thanks for that info RPC, I suggested Les Emery as I had heard good things of him from Norton owning pals, I was not aware of his other opinions although I had heard that he has "strong views" on things! I will not point anyone else that way unless with a warning attached!
