1)Back in late July, Norm clarified
Duffel's query re.timing his later
twin's ignition with the horizontal
distributor. Have the '49-'52 setup
with the VERTICAL distributor, No
manual mentions which cylinder fires
first when rotor is turning clockwise
with cap off. Also every pix shows the distributor cap's flat side facing the
right, but grub screw then tightens at
random on the distributor's base, and
not on the indent provided, although
if it was locked in that mode, there
would be no leeway for final adjustment.

2)Our host's manual give's KLG F50 spark
plug recommendation, Champion L10 etc.
Is that right? Every Brit. twin owned
years ago seemed to have KLG F80 surely.

Meanwhile faulty generator was never
resolved as every local auto electrical
shop 'too busy ' to sniff at antiquties,
but have set up motor with gasoline and
battery on a movable dolly to have least
hear it run and know the rebuild was not
in vain.

Thanxs, Gordon

Hi Gordon,
It doesn't matter which lead you use providing the one that the rotor button is pointing to in the dizzy cap is for the cylinder that is on TDC compression stroke . Once you have loosened the clamp bolt the distributor can rotate 360 degrees so you can put it anywhere so the flat side doesn't matter but it makes it easier to remove the cap because the clips are easier to get at with the flat facing toward you. Sit the cap on top of the dizzy and with a marker put a mark on the body directly below one of the plug wires in the cap. If the dizzy is in position bring the motor to TDC and if the rotor button does not line up with the mark bring it to TDC on the other cylinder and if it still does not line up with the mark you put on the dizzy body, lift the dizzy up and refit it so that it does line up. This has your timing set good enough for it to run. Then it is a case of going back to the first part of the answer to find which plug for which lead

Gordon, the plug list for Champion Plugs for a Royal Enfield 500cc twin lists L10 or as you say KLG F50.

Hope this clears that side of your problems

Norm, thanks indeed for remixing
that advice you gave Duffel. Have
scribbled both notes down carefully,
and will have your guidance when I
go over to my garage later in the
week trembling with anticipation!

Yorkie, Thank you for the gospel
on Champion 'plug listings. L10
or KLG F50 is that which lowly
Briggs and Stratton lawnmower
motors use; or way back, the 4
stroke Villiers or JAP once had!
