 Does anybody know if there is anyway of knowing what engine numbers were shipped to India proir to engines being produced there and if they used the G2 prefix on them and when the G2 numbering stopped

As we know all Bullets supplied to Madras were stamped G2, Madras continued with G2 and added EI numbering alongside G2.


G2 and B was was then used, then dropped and prefix G2 and B was adopted from 1982,  


I have a G2/415... dated Aug 1958 as supplied to Madras from Reddith.

 Thanks Hemant, big help, now one more question, and by your number yours would be one of the very early ones delivered if that is where the numbering started. What is your frame like, is it like the English frame or is it like the later Indian ones?

Norn, I have in my head 1962 for the Indian in house type frames. I may be wrong and not sure where I've read it. I've seen a genuine 64 Indian bullet with the typical Indian bolt through bracing at the back rather than the curved tubes.

  I'm piecing bits together for our meeting tonight as a new member picked up a G2 at a clearing sale recently and we need to be able to verify what it is for Club reg. I haven't seen the bike and don't expect to tonight, but I belive there is a couple of photos so it should give us something to go on. It is claimed to be a 53 model 500 but I thought they were a JS and very few of these were produced, mostly 350's.

Norm, if it's a pre 1956 500 engine it should have the slim timing chest without the auto advance bulge. The later timing chest with the bulge as fitted to post 1956 engines (includingIndian engines) cannot be fitted to the earlier engines.


Pre 1956 350s have square oil pump housings no bulge and no fins on the oil tank. 


All British 500s should have an engine number prefix of "JS".

From what I understand mid 1961 is when the frames changed from the Redditch made to the Indian made frames. G2 is always a 350, if your new member has a 500 with a G2 engine number then it has been converted from a 350. This can be done by using a 500 engine and re-stamping the early 350 number or by machining out the crankcases to take the 500 top end. Over the last few years this modification has become very popular in India for dealers to sell to the export market. Some dealers are open about what has been done, others sell them as 500's and the owners do not know any better. Some dealers do a nice job, others a shocking job, I have seen them both!
