Meh! I've got my first bone dry bullet engine and it's all thanks to silicone. I've used it (high temp) on the .5mm copper head gasket as I had a weeping joint there and I've used in under the rocker covers. A nice light wipe around so there is only the thinnest layer and Bob's your uncle. Dry as a.....well nuff said. None of these products are idiot proof but especially if re using old gaskets it's the berries. For goodness sake wipe off the outside surfaces though as any that does squeeze out looks awful. Another product I can't speak highly enough of is the locktite quick metal. I had a flogged out journal on my back wheel due to a previous owner putting what must have been a Model G axle in. It was short by about 1/8" so it pulled the bearings up against the hub rather than the axle. It's been back together with a new axle for two or three years now and not a hit of trouble

Cheers for all your replies lads... I managed to squeeze an oil change in yesterday (amongst all the Mothers Days festivities) and this morning stuck another gasket on top of the old one, used this red gear gasket sealant (liberally) and voila! 25 miles done today and no leak.

And relax.

hi peter my home market 350 had 2 gaskets on each rocker top from new ,when i took them off to replace an exhaust valve i just reused them but only fitted 1 per top ,i must say that the standard green rocker gaskets and the tappet cover gaskets reuse a multitude of times much thicker gasket material than the english paper thin crap ,but i have used no silicone sealent except for the exhaust port ,and a smear of wellseal on the head gasket, with no leaks up to date 7000 miles down the road.

Nice one Grunda and Cath... I must agree that this is the only forum I still enjoy being part of after other bike-related forums got silly, with insults and snobbery becoming more prominent that exchanges of wit/wisdom/knowledge, etc.

Now then, the other problem is the occassional noisy noises from 'down below' and the rocker boxes... I have no other explanation other tan some kind of lack of oil, but I don't wanna get too paranoid about it!  In any case, today was a joy to ride around with at least of of the complaints dealt with. Thanks again peeps.
