Hi there y'all ------ I would ride down from Shropshire to join in the fun but don't want to embarass you by riding all the way back again in the same day !!!!!!  ( Ho-ho ). I like BIG, crispy bacon sarnies with dollops of Brahn sorse---so have one for me an I'll send the dosh to you. ( oh yeah ?)

Well, I thought it was about time I resurfaced. I'll answer the original question first.


I bought an Enfield as my Bantam was no longer up to the task. Yeah, I've had Jap bikes in the past (KH250's and a GS425), but the 'owner experience' just isn't the same. Even the Norton Rotary I had wasn't rewarding to own. To my mind, Enfields offer the 'you verses it' ethos. Will it start? Will it get me to where I'm going without breaking down? Enfields (like other Brit bikes) demand to be looked after. The reward is when they start first time and perform without fault. Japs bikes don't offer that. Moving swiftly on....


Hey look. Somebody else is in North Devon! I live in Barny and that roundabout between Bishops Tawton and Roundswell was the reason I bought my 500 Lightning.

Fast approaching 70, I returned on a 125cc last spring after a break of nearly 50 years since passing my test. I spent the entire summer looking at bikes to decide what to buy for this year. Why did I buy my Classic Bullet? I did not want a big powerful bike, partly safety and partly concern about speeding offences. Too many in my cars. And I wanted easy parking in my garage. And I don't much like the appearance of modern bikes. I wanted something that looked like an old traditional bike. I didn't like the idea of having a bike that consumed more petrol than my wife's Honda Jazz. 125cc bikes were not powerful enough so in the end the only bike that fitted my requirements was the Royal Enfield - I found no other bike that matched the looks or comfort of riding position.


 


I mention all this in case I missed something. Are there any other  bikes that tick the boxes I described?  


 


I actually bought the bike last October and today passed 1250 miles. Loved every minute on the road.

Hi Fido - I agree with your comments regarding comfort. I find my 2001 500cc Classic the most comfortable bike I think I've ever sat on. The riding position seems just like my favourate arm chair, and as long as I keep the speed down to 50mph I think I could just keep going all day!


Unlike my FJR1300 which, although supposedly, a super comfortable mile eater, I find causes pains in my hips and shoulders. I know this may be age related (58) but nonetheless still means more stops for stretching than on the Bullet.

Most new bikes of today are so ugly,  electronical, computerized, overpowered, fat and heavy, ostentatious, extravagant and unmotorcyclelike so I can´t think of having anything else then av RE Bullet.


I want an real motorcykle that looks like a motorcycle schould look.  With visible engine, visible carburettor, visibly frame, proper power, reasonable petrol consumption. If there were no Bullets I wouldn´t be drivning motorcyle at all.

 And if we could get some enterprising company to manufacture a Super Meteor motor we could slot into all the older Bullets kicking around the world we would have the best of both world A bike that has the looks we want and plenty of performance to run the freeways if we had to and very little weight gain. Sounds so simple, a bolt in conversion

you're not wrong there Svante, modern bikes are hideously ugly (I just saw one that thought it was a stealth fighter, painted all black and with bits going off at odd and strange angles). I thnk vehicle design has got it completely wrong at the present, not just bikes but cars too. Have you ever seen anything as bloody stupid looking as the Nissan joke? Or that Landrover evoque with the tiny back windows (what is it with new cars and tiny little rear passenger windows?) that looks like it wants to be a van?


It has been said that a couple of dozen monkeys armed with typewriters would eventually come up with some Shakespeare but, having been beaten to it they appear to have gone into vehicle design instead. Unsuccessfully.


One has reached an age where if one wants a new vehicle the only answer is Cotswold Classics. Those old Beesa's, Trumpets and even a Panther - its almost pornography!
