Hi Wolf. I had similar symptoms on my Electra X last year. It turned out that one of the yellow alternator wires coming out of the chaincase wasn't firmly housed in the connector block draped over the crankcase.

       Problem here is they don't have a condensor, be easy if they were that simple

Oh that is a different matter then. Perhaps a dying ht lead? Are they carbon nylon?

     Can't remember, can't be sure but I think they are copper but possibly with a resistor cap, I altered so much stuff on mine I just forget. I can't remember if you can change the lead or not, could be moulded into the coil, I remember something like that. I just carry a new coil and lead under the seat.  And getting back to Wolf's problem it could be his TCI unit, no way of testing that either

My 2008 Electra had a similar problem - turned out to be the coil. 


PS I for one am glad there are no points to fiddle with!

hi guys i give up, cant find whats wrong so she"s going into the shop for repair. just waiting for my new tax disc then taking her in. will post what they find when i get her back, many thanks to all that tried to help. wolf.

       Don't know anybody who could lend you a coil and TCI unit just to test?

hi norm, no afraid not but im lucky to have an enfield dealer about two miles down the road.  just a wee bit disapointed in my own lack of knowledge, iv never been technicaly gifted and kinda hoped i could learn a bit more with the enfield. so the shops gonna fix her this time but im gonna fix her next time.... well i will try..lol. wolf.

       Not your fault and I bet the dealer probably can't diagnose the problem either, all he will probably do is replace the coil and if that fixes it you think he is smart, but if that doesn't fix it he will replace the TCI unit and you will still think he is smart. If that doesn't fix it he will start looking at the carb and if that fixes it you will be very happy because you now know your ignition electrics are new so no problems and with the carb adjusted all should be good.It is a problem with these as you can't easily test the coil and TCI unit. Sorry I can't help any more
