Ed, no way canals could cope with the volume these days. Train? yes, more could be done but Beeching scrapped a good deal of the permanent way which was a Victorian legacy which would be very expensive to replace.

The motorways were originally built for goods transport, to keep big wagons out of towns. Private motorists can use them because we have a right to use the 'Queen's Highway'. If HGV's were banned from the motorways, or restricted to 50mph, banned from overtaking, restricted to the inside lane blah, blah, blah... then your cost of living would rise significantly.

If you look at the number of "logistics hubs" that have sprung up like mushrooms round motorway junctions (see M1 J12 for Amazon etc or Grove Park M1 J15 for instance,) you'll see that the distribution industry now uses lorries on roads as a form of mobile warehousing. This is not what roads were built for either. I would like to see a campaign to re-introduce bends into roads, de-dual carriageways and re-install plenty of hazards like fords, low bridges, hump back bridges, blind bends and anything else the old signs used to warn of! This would have the useful dual purpose of making roads more fun for old bikes and culling morons in cars with way too much power and too many distractions on the dashboard. Well I can dream...

I agree with Pete F. I am not a lorry driver myself, but I understand why they do it. They are on strict time schedules, tacos, ferries etc., any chance to make time and not have to slow down is their prority. I learned a long time ago just to chill and let it be. Was in Donegal a couple of years ago. Long straight road, car coming towards me, 1 car in front of me. They decided to stop and chat. Time for me to chill. Ah!!!!!!!

... Should give way to a Bullet in the same way that trains do in India.

i love 'the freight should be on the railways and canals' comment.

how will the food etc. get to the shops and supermarkets? we'd all die of starvation waiting for the barge to turn up.
