Having changed the mains and big end bearings on my 350 classic, I am on the verge of the first startup. Obviously I will fill it with oil (2.5 litres 20/50 OK?, but I am reluctant to just kick it over, thinking of all those "dry" components.
There is a bit of oil in the combustion chamber from fitting the barrel, and I thought to put a bit in through the tappet cover to oil the cams, cogs and oil pump spindle.
What else to do? Kick it over a few times to get the oil up into the head?

When I done mine I took the plug out and put the bike in gear and then walked it round the garden a few times till I see the oil seeping out the bangeo bolt Id loosened on the head. it was easier than kicking it.

I just kicked mine over with the plug out for a few minutes until oil started coming out of the feed pipe to the rockers.

Something similar myself. Plug out and bung it in gear. Loosen the quill bolt slightly then walk it round a bit until oil seeps out. Nip that up then loosen the rocker banjos and repeat. Once oil is seeping out of there, you know both oil pumps are working and all the oilways are fully primed.

I should point out that our hosts state it takes around thirty seconds at idle speed to fill the pumps and send oil down the quill bolt if you've emptied the timing chest. It takes another two minutes at idle speed for oil to get from the sump to the rockers... So you might need to push it round for a while.

Stinkwheel, The timing chest is on the return path for oil from the rockers. Shouldn't stop oil getting to the quill if this is empty. Feed to the engine is; oil-tank>feed pump>filter>quill>crankshaft. It's worth soaking the filter in oil rather than fitting it dry as this speeds things up a bit.

Pete. Remember what else is part of the timing chest casting.... If it's been off and emptied, both pumps, the filter cavity and the oilways to and from them are also empty. Im presuming it has been off and emptied if the crankcases have been split.

Taking an enfield for a walk seems a perverse sort of occupation, more enjoyable with a grandchild or a dog ;).............I've always done as Simon, plug out swing kickstart until oil comes out the rockers. If it is coming out the rockers oil must have been pumped through the quill to the bigend into the crankcase to and been picked up by the scavenge pump & fed to the top end.........Does not take long at all.

Whichever way you choose, it would be a good idea to prime and lubricate the big end by squirting clean oil in the quill bolt recess.
