I bought a small 4 cell lifepo4 battery so I can get rid of the battery carrier. I'm also thinking of getting a motogadget m-unit v.2 to clean up the wiring, and allow me to make do with less switch work on the handlebars.

Looking at the wiring, to me it seems that the casquette would make a good place to give these their home. It's out of sight, big enough, and it would reduce the wiring a lot. All that'd be left below the seat would be the reg/rect (which I'm replacing with a boyer powerbox) and the startmotor solenoid (which I'm only leaving in so I can temporarily hookup a larger battery to save my leg when I need to work on the bike.)

Is there any reason this would be a bad idea? Heat or vibrations maybe?

Don't forget the speedometer intrudes into the casquette quite a way, (which is why anyone looking for a LED conversion for the H4 headlamp bulb needs to choose carefully) and any extra kit installed in there needs to allow room for the speedo drive cable too.



I am not saying you CAN'T fit extra items in there, you will have to see for yourself, but I suspect it will not be an easy fit. Try a dummy wooden block the same size as an actual motogadget m-unit v.2 first, L/W/H: 101 x 61 x 28 mm, and see if it fits. If it does and you have room for the associated wiring, please send us the pictures when it's finished!

I'll try a dry fitting tomorrow and report my findings.

But you don't see any issues (provided it fits) in putting the battery and munit in the casquette?

It's a 2004 (ES/5speed) with one of our hosts smiths-like speedometers fitted.



I had the headlight open a few days ago to hookup up the gps and noticed that the wiring would be reduced a lot if I were to put in an m-unit (along with some other simplifications I want to make.)

But it wasn't until yesterday I thought of fitting it in the casquette, along with the small battery. My memory told me it looked quite roomy (with the headlight out at least...), but I guess I'll find out tomorrow whether or not it'll actually fit.



The fact I couldn't find any evidence of anyone trying it before me, is what drove me to post my question in the first place.

Out of curiosity, which circuits are you planning to reduce?

Think i see how indicator relay could go as theres one inbuilt in "munit".

I only ever use the ES when I need to work on the bike, and when I need to do that I can disconnect the small battery and hook up a bigger one.



Indeed, the flasher will go, and the wiring concerning the lighting system will be simplified a lot. The start button will be relocated to somewhere below the seat. I'm also getting rid of the kill switch and the clutch switch and removing the pilot lamps which were part of the original speedometer and are still floating around in the casquette.

I'm replacing all the switch gear with either one toggle and three buttons, or just four buttons (with the wiring inside the handlebar.)

Using the m-unit allows me to replace all the switch wiring with much thinner wiring (they then only carry a signal, no longer the power to run the accessories behind them.)

And I'm removing the decompressor and putting a button on the valve instead.

Altogether that should reduce the wiring nest in the casquette quite a bit.


Having the battery and m-unit in the casquette would also remove a lot of the wiring between the casquette and the seat.

Getting back to the speedometer, the replica-ish Smiths chronometric you mention is quite bulky, but a genuine chronometric instrument takes up a bit less room in the casquette and will ooze class. You might be able to find one with the correct calibration in km, flanged bezel and bottom-fitted trip reset. You might not be able to find one at a reasonable price, though!

The m-unit fits. The battery however, does not. Width and depth of the battery are ok, but it's a bit too high (85mm, not counting battery terminals.)
