Hi all, if your car/bike has a current MOT and you get it retested before the current expiry date and the new test fails does it make the current MOT null and void? Cheers

No not as such but if the car is deemed unroadworthy you will be driving illegally.

And what happened to Bertie?

Or is this hyperpathetical?

It is my understanding that yes it does make the previous MoT void but that unless it was deemed unroadworthy it can be taken away for repair and retested. This stuff written on the MoT paperwork? Don't forget that these things are now computerised and logged online.

The gov.uk website advises that if you previous mot is still valid you can drive the vehicle away from the mot station, therefore a fail doesn't void your old mot. If the old mot is expired you can only drive to a place of repair. You can be fined up to £2500 banned from driving and get penalty points for driving an unroadworthy vehicle, go figure?.

To be fair, you can be prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy vehicle at any time, even on the day it passed it's mot if something has happened in the meantime to render it unroadworthy. Here in France the system is slightly different, the mot runs from the day of the test and is valid for two years, if the car fails you have 2 months in which to fix it and take it back for a re-test, but like the UK you can still be prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy vehicle at any time. I guess if the fault is that serious you should have fixed it before the mot was due,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Note I said "if the car fails"? No mot here for bikes,,,,,,,,,,, yet!

I would read very carefully what it written on the actual MoT fail paperwork.

The bike did squeak,
and then it squealed,
"Oh, look at that,
it's lost it's wheels!"
