Hi, I aquired a 1970 350 bullet a couple of months ago. A friend of mine had it since 1972. In 1974 it did the big end due probably to the quill seal falling apart. The people who rebuilt it did not have a clue and put it back together without a seal,hence it started making noises soon after. My friend put it away until I got it recently. Ok,that's the history. So now I am rebuilding it. The gasket kit arrived with a rubber quill seal that appears to sit proud of the worm bolt. This does not look right to me. Some on the forum here in Australia say it will squash in and be ok. As this is the cause of the rebuild I would obviously like to get this right. So I'm asking you gurus in the Mother country the correct method. Should be a photo attached.

It doesn’t look right to me. I suggest you search on the main website for part number 144452, which is a worm nut with a neoprene seal bonded in place.

Yes, that looks all kinds of dodgy, like someone has whittled down a seal designed for something else to fit in place of a cork seal.

As above, the bonded neoprene ones are the way forwards. Also make sure the pump worm can be easily moved with thumb pressure. If not, sort that out too, that's what usually kills enfields.

The separate rubber and cork seals will stand out proud, as in the picture, the idea being that the quill bolt shoulder bears against it and creates a seal at that point as well, although as already mentioned, that seal does appear to have been messed with. The bonded in types are fine, but the overall diameter of the worm itself is about 3/4 mm smaller with this type of worm nut.

From the photo, it looks like someone has cut down a rubber bung intended for another entirely different purpose.

Seeing how critical this seal is, I’d want to fit the best one I could find.
