I've tried a few searches through the Forum with no luck on this topic, so apologies if it's in an obvious thread elsewhere. For probably peculiar reasons I want to investigate changing out the speedometer gearbox on my 2020 C5 Trials Replica. Yeah, yeah, brand new, I know, I'm tinkering! There seem to be two sizes of the wheel end, the "drive end" if you will, of the inner cable - a thicker one, and a thinner one which is the type I have fitted to my machine. I have the black gearbox.

Can anyone advise whether the thicker drive cable inner can be used with a gearbox suitable for ABS, or is this a dead end? Indeed, are there two different "driven end" square shaft sizes?

It's to do with getting a neat installation of an Acewell speedo/tach/trip meter.

Thanks in advance...

Would it not be easier to switch out the cable? So you can use the original speedo drive?

Looking at their website, I'd say acewell make a big thing about their products being "plug and play" so if you were to get in touch with them and let them know a newer model enfield has a different size end on the cable, they may well be unaware of this and interested in sorting you a different cable out. They may even do it for free if you word it right, like by offering to send them your cable/speedo drive so they can measure it.

Failing that, the likes of venhill (if you're made of money) or carrot cycles (if you're not) will make up custom speedo drive cables to whatever spec you ask for.

Not heard of any thick or thin inner speedo cables, yet. Afaik your bike has a stock mechanical drive. Your new acewell will screw onto the drive and a built in hall sensor converts your rotation the electrical impulses for the new unit. You do not need your old drive cable, inner or outer.

Hi Haggis

If I can get photo bucket to do what I want it to, you'll see that the two cables supplied by Acewell have different ends.

The smaller of the two is a close match to the one in use on my machine, and with the right collet, is a good fit.

I'd like to get the one with the strain relief working, but it won't fit in the speedo gearbox on my 2020 bike.

I hope this clarifies my question.

thanks in advance...

I'm trying to gather information so I can get a better result for the next person to try to update their Bullet speedo. If I can document everything, I'll get in touch with the local distributor again. They have already been very helpful and approachable, but I have more problems than the speedo drive. I'll make a more detailed post when I have a good solution for the wiring issues I've run into. I can see Acewell go to great lengths to make their gear "plug & play"...but RE seem to have thwarted it with my bike.

Hmmm, I can clearly see why it wont fit your speedo drive, it is a fair bit bigger.
I think that's one for acewell to rectify.
The big fat one is the one that has the hall sensor and rotating magnet in it.
What's the smaller second cable for, not the hex one.?🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

They’re both Hall effect senders. I had hoped that there’d been a change somewhere, but I didn’t expect that the sturdy one with the well engineered strain relief to be the problem. The smaller one fits my speedo gearbox, and appears to be the same size as the mechanical cable originally fitted to the bike.

Thanks for the info. I’ll take It up with ACEWELL.

Nah - won't budge. Seems to be formed over the Hall effect sender.

I’ve got the Acewell speedo in, and sort-of operating.

The speed is way off - I’d know if an 800km old C500 was doing 130km/h in 4th, and mine isn’t. Was there some trick to the settings? I measured 1950mm circumference for the 19” front wheel, set SE to “Hall”, and for want of better info picked SP001

Can you spot an obvious error?
