But in particular:
"The Amal cold start is a crude thing, a slide that drops down blocking the air flow, but without air flow the main jet produces less fuel"
Sorry jefrs, that's complete bo**ocks. (br)If you restrict the air flow into the carb the piston is still tying to suck in it's 500cc so this results in a higher vacuum in the venturi which results in MORE fuel being drawn through the jet/needle and hence a richer mixture. This is not the usual venturi effect which is present without the choke.
That's how chokes work (but not the mixture enriching system which is fitted on the Mikarbs)

Now take a good look at the Amal slide. It descends directly in front of the main jet thus blocking and deflecting the air flow from it, it is not a good design. The venturi is not just a suck it up by vacuum system, it requires an air flow over it. The Mikarb enrichment system is better in this respect. If you've used an Amal you soon find using the air slide choke is a bit of a waste of time, which is why later carb designs don't do that.

A bit off topic, but I always started the Bullet by standing beside it and using my right foot; this way I found that if it ever back-fired, I wouldn`t be shot over the handlebars. The only time I would start it sitting astride was when it usually stalled at Green traffic lights (they suck electricity from the ignition) or when there were 50 Hells Angles behind me at the lights.

Scalyback asks, "who's winning"

Haven't you guys worked it out yet?, when jefrs is involved no one wins!, the guy is either a "troll" or just very misguided, luckily I think that probably most people on here have learned to just laugh at his outrageous and inaccurate post now.
