Hmmm. I suspect an "anti-social guttural racket" is what's going to emenate from this machine when it's finished judging by the very short, reverse cone mega our hosts have provided for it. That said, all I ever hear from the riding position is induction noise on my 350.

The only "Whining" I used to get from No.2 Bullet was from 'er indoors when riding pillion.....She never did like it...."It's noisy, leaks oil, it's a dirty Black with hand-painted Gold lining, won't go more than 55 mph and hard to start in the morning".........to which I replied}--- "Yes I know all that but what's WRONG with it ?? "

Looks like plain scaremongering to me. It would take tens of thousands of miles for timing gear backlash to make any impression on the hardened surfaces of the timing gears. I would rather run slightly loose fitting timing gears and put up with a bit of extra noise, than leave my engine open to attack from adjustable cam spindles slewing around, but each to their own.

Thats the way to do it, proper careful job. Kind of opposite to yours, my 59 cases had an oil seal conversion, but the seal went right through into the cam area. I think late Redditch cases have a deeper cam cut out so there's just no room for an oil seal. I had a top hat style phosphor bronze bush made to plug the hole!

Chris,

that's a nice looking job, though I think I'd prefer an oil seal where possible. Strangely enough the Electra-X has neither oil seal nor bronze bush behind the timing pinion (as standard), I think the intention was to rely on the high capacity of the gear scavenge pump to overcome wet-sumping. My old Electra would leak oil into the sump from the timing chest but somehow never smoked on start-up. Would that my AVL hybrid didn't....

Meanwhile if you look at the Indian 500 Bullet crankcases currently in our hosts' used parts section, you can see where the modification for the lumpier cam by the previous owner has sliced through the oil seal housing. I wonder if a custom bronze bush would be the answer to that one.

Stinkwheel,

I'm not sure the ignition side of the timing gears would have added much to the mechanical noise, as they're quite lightly loaded compared to the cam gears. Is your crank mounted ignition going to be an ignition generator only, or will it be the sort with added lighting coils?

Hoping to fit one of the electrex ignitions with the AC/DC output (Mmm, vernier scale ignition timing built in). Been doing some research on LED lighting and AC and I think I can make effective lighting with the fairly low power output they have. I also think I've come up with an elegant solution to run the tail light on DC with the headlamp/instrument lights on AC using the same switch (and a diode-protected DPDT relay).

I'm going to do some test fitting of bulbs in the 350 to see if they actually work effectively but the upshot of what I've found out is you can use LED bulbs designed for positive earth on an AC system, with the exception of a stop and tail (hence the relay). May just use lighting relays anyway, it saves reliance on switches which can cause a lot of power drop.

The idea is to hide a tiny AGM battery and the bulk of the electrics inside the redundant tea caddy air filter housing.
