Reds, if you have run the bike to warm the oil before draining you will not be having a dry start after the oil change. There will be sufficient oil left on the vulnerable parts to protect them until the new oil reaches them. It is a good idea though to pre-soak the filter as already suggested. The RE dealer will do no different except maybe not pre-soak the filter. Edward

Is a service more than change the oil and kick the tyres? Sometimes a professional service is worthwhile because they can do the job cheaper than your time and effort, plus they (should) check over the bike for stuff that you've missed.

Jefrs, depends on how you value your time. I'm retired from full time work so I have the time to do a proper job.

I believe I can do a service on any bike to a better standard than any dealer who's time is definitely money.
My bikes are over-serviced if anything both in frequency and scope.

After fitting the oil filter take out the feed quill/bolt. Always inspect the seal ithat takes the oil into the crankshaft , early ones were cork and need regular replacement. With this bolt removed you can see where the oil comes up from thre filter . Using a syringe/pump oilcan fill up the filterthrough this hole. Having a full filter will minimise the time taken for the oil to reach the bigend. Graham

If you care to look in an Enfield owners manual there are up to 40 checks to be carried out, depending on mileage.
