Thanks Papasmurf, I will look into this, my last escapade involved a jack under the sump, engine & box balanced on my knee, while trying to "rock" the whole lot into a position where could line up some bolt holes closely enough to ram a screwdriver in.... ;)

if you have the head and barrel off, then that makes the engine lighter. I would do the whole lot at once, and I'm unbelievably puny.

BTW, 2 revolutions = 4 strokes, so something valve, pushrod or rocker related sounds likely, as Papa Smurf suggests.

Lennie,forgive me querying on your post re-installing a '55 500 Twin
motor back in the frame, but like to ask meastros Mark or Simon if
possible to reinstall said motor/gearbox w/ chain case and clutch attached,
Simply confused from a recent BSA B44 motor refitted juggle had done
since last Enfield fiasco.. Thanxs

Also. would like to mention Papasmurf's use of a cable rachet winch
in another context which justifies having one. Yesterday, slipped
on maneuvering my unwieldy and heavy Kawa Ninja 1000 out of the garage.
and it's falling over against other machines. Impossible to lift by
one'self, and eventual help from a gruff neighbour. Had he not been
around, would have had to rig up the winch, and hours wasted figuring
where to attach it

Never dealt with an RE twin in that way but as far as I can see the older ones at least are a very similar setup. This would tend to suggest that yes you can put the full assembled mother and gearbox including covers in place in one fell swoop. My method of putting in the motors is to perch the lump on a trolley jack with good wheels and then wiggle it into place. The frame is alarmingly flexible without the motor in it so I like to get all the bolts in place and then tighten them up. Tightening them as you go can in up with a mysterious lack of alignment particularly on the brackets underneath that the hex foot peg shaft slides through.

Simon, thanxs for the feedback. As with the previous early Twin
we discussed, this motor I have also fully assembled with the Chain
case ane clutch installed, and had set it up on a wheeled dolly
arrangment to start it up it up outsjde in case it becomes a fire
ball. BSA B44 motor I mentioned can be installed only one side of
the frame, and then tilted up 45 degrees, hence my apprenhension.
Floor jack idea is superb, but frame is without it's wheels so will
just manhandle the motor over. My nearby neighbour over here, a ex
pat Kiwi with a vast vintage collection, gave me the encouragement to
start all over again with a mix-match later '55 motor, having to
modify the early chain case, and generator cradle among other things
