Dennis, you were right, new cam didn't fix it, certainy helped it to start easier, but the left points are opening before the right by probably 1mm on the cam.

Hi Norm, ------ Time for plan B then. ----- I have done a few of these SR 2 mags now and don't bother trying the cam, as yet I have not had one that cured the problem. they are quite easy to do it just needs a bit of thought and careful measuring before you attack them. Good luck with it.

Dennis,
At least now with the new cam I can see the lobes, old cam had been ground/filed into an oval so it was very hard to see what was going on

Fitted another SR2 mag (from a Super Meteor that runs very well) to it today and for some bizare reason at one stage it ran on the left cylinder but now it has gone back to running only on the right again. This is easy to tell as I'm sick of fitting the siamese exhausts So sticking you hand in front of the heads very quickly tells you which cylinder is firing. I'm done for ideas

Hi norm what plugs are you using? There are some counterfeit ones around causing problems mostly ngk.

Hi Dennis, have 50 plugs here they can't all be bad. Have it running on right cylinder, take plug from that cylinder, put it in the left, doesn't work, put it in the right again and it does. It really has me stumped, it isn't magneto, compression on both cylinders the same and the left plug gets wet so it has fuel

Hi Norm
What bike is it that's giving the trouble?, is it twin or single carb?.
To be honest it has me stumped as well at the moment.

Hi Norm,
There are some dodgy plug caps around these days and by coincidence, a Meteor [single carb] I worked on recently would run on both sides to begin with, but gradually begin to miss on one side, then lose it all together. Everytime I took the plug out to check it [and not really find anything] and put it back in, the engine would run on two again, before the same thing happened again. It turned out to be a duff [brand new] plug cap and the internal connection where it goes through 90 degrees was faulty. Everytime I replaced the plug cap after checking the plug, it remade the bad connection, until the vibration from the running engine shook it apart again - took a while to realise what was happening, but a second brand new plug cap sorted this machine.
Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Paul
I agree that at the moment there are all sorts of dodgy, faulty, fake, parts around, I could be wrong of course but Norm is now trying a different mag from another bike which runs OK so I hope that the entire mag has been used complete with distributor cover, leads and caps.
You did didn't you Norm?.

Paul, Dennis, it is a Merry Christmas, turned out to be the carby, has me stumped single carb but would only run one cylinder. I had stripped and cleaned the carb when I first started with the problem. Yesterday I fitted the Concentric from my Bullet and it fired straight up Thanks for your trouble once again and have a good Christmas, I certainly will
