Replaced Speedo drive (plastic type) although better I don't know if I am doing 30mph or 40 mph.I am happy with the Speedo and cable as I have checked by putting it on an electric drill and it indicates smooth needle movement.Should it be better?

More often than not. An erratic speedo is caused by cable snatch. If your speedo works fine when attached to a drill. I'd suspect the routing of the cable on the bike. The inner cable is more likely to 'snatch' when sharp bends and tight corners are involved. This situation is made worse when the cable is too long, or too short.

Having spent several thousand mikes looking at it bouncing around I have come to the conclusion that it is due to a lack of damping in the mechanism. I've replaced the cable, greased it and done all the other usual stuff with no effect. Its worse on bumpy roads and when accelerating /decelerating it seem to steady a bit.
