Just been out for an hour's ride around the quiet country lanes of East Yorkshire. I do a regular curcuit around Hull, taking in the villages of Newbald, Little Weighton, Elloughton and Welton etc. the roads are quiet, calm, bumpy and lovely. So imagine my surprise today at turning off a main road and heading for Welton only to find huge "40 Zone" signs all over the place, together with white lines at either side of the road effectively narrowing it to a single carriageway, and massive red circles with white "40" lettering on the road itself every 300 yards or so. This countryside graffiti has, IMHO, ruined the look of the once green and pleasant land. And to what end? To be honest any sane person wouldn't do much more than 40 anyway, and if some young tear arse comes along he's not going to be put off by 40 Zone signs. We're supposed to be living in austerity at the moment with no money for road surfacing or pot hole filling, but there's always money in the pot for ridiculous, hair-brained schemes like this. End of rant - I feel a little better now
