Hi all and hoping some body may be able to help. On my 350 bullet the alternator wiring is yellow orange purple purple.
I have bought a new alternator and its wiring is yellow orange red black. Both alternators are exactly the same except for the wiring colours. The yellow and orange will hook up ok but what about the red and black. Does any body know where they go. The only place they can go is on the 2 purple wires. Does it matter which way they are connected. Thank you from binary.

Take a much closer look at the stator windings? Are you 1000% certain that all six coils are identical on BOTH Stators?.

Do both stator frames the same thickness of lamination's? There are two thickness's of AC/DC stators with two different coil windings...

The electric starts bikes have additional capacity for the DC side to charge the larger battery. They are also more prone to regulator failure.

Every thing is the same with the 2 stators. This is off a year 2000 iron barrel RE. Just kick start no electric. The only difference is one has 2 purple wires and the other has a red wire and a black wire. I have already connected the yellow wire and the orange wire for the AC headlight. I just wanted to find out about where the red wire and the black wire connect to the 2 purple wires. It is sounding like with 2 wires of the same colour purple and purple it may not matter which ones the red and the black wires connect to. I suppose that I could connect them up one way and check to see if the battery is charging and if not just reverse the wires. This is the Indians a-bloody again making the same stators and using different wiring colour connections. What a stupid thing to do. Why am I not surprised??.

Hi all,

Sorry to resurrect an old post but if any body has this electrical problem of the different wiring colours after buying a new alternator. I have mine back together today and the battery is charging. The yellow and orange wires from the alternator went to the yellow and orange wires on the motorcycle ok. The alternator red wire and the black wire one each goes to the two purple wires on the motorcycle.
I hooked the red and the black wire one each to the two purple wires. The battery did not get a charge and my tester just read the battery voltage of 12.0 volts. I then switched the red and the black wires around to the opposite purple wires and the battery was then getting a 14.0 volt charge. So if any body has bought an alternator with this different coloured wiring this worked for me.
