Around about three years ago, after having a number of clutch cable failures on a 2007 Electra X(at both ends)I fitted the 5 speed upgraded operating arm. Since then only 1 cable failure at handlebar end. Yesterday was different. Happily riding along, felt the now familiar sensation of clutch lever go limply to the handlebar, never mind, I shall fit the spare cable when I get to work: oh no I won't, found the cable intact but the clevis on the operating arm had split clean in two. I shall have to start carrying a spare one of these now, just in case.

I did see a while back that someone had managed a hydraulic clutch conversion for the 5 speed box (our hosts only list one for the 4 speed), using what appeared to be Chinese pit bike parts! Otherwise there are some interesting possibilities on the Venhill web site.

Thank you for this information. I will now make a replacement part myself that will be guaranteed not to break. I do not like the look of the cable ends either. They look like they have been put on by pressure squashing some sort of metal that resembles solder in the shape of cable ends onto the cable ends. I will make a clutch cable up with proper brass ends soldered on in the old fashioned way with a soldering iron. These never pull off and the brass cable ends can be reused just by melting the old solder out of them.
