You don't say what model Of bike your playing with, I have checked the wiring diagram on my 2009 Electra and the n/switch earths direct to frame/engine, the brown wire goes to n/light, The n/light has two connections brown from n/switch and blue to headlamp.

When the clutch is pulled in it provides a ground to the starter relay, its third wire passes to the neutral switch. When in neutral the neutral switch provides ground to the starter relay (when the clutch is released), it also provides ground to the neutral lamp which has its own live feed.

The starter relay is activated on the live side by the starter button via the kill switch but the starter relay won't fire unless it has a ground from firstly the clutch switch, secondly the neutral switch.

The clutch switch should have three wires, the neutral switch has two although the 'live' brown branches to clutch switch and to neutral lamp, and maybe another to ECU/EI depending on model; the branching join may be nowhere near the switch, it could well be in the casquette.

The neutral switch ground point should be near the neutral switch i.e. near the bottom of the frame seat tube, eyelets on bolt (which is quite well hidden). It may be worth checking that the neutral lamp has not blown.

Thus the clutch switch has a ground wire, a wire to the starter relay and a wire to the neutral switch. The clutch switch ground point is probably in the casquette (for the lights) but that bolt should have a black wire leading back to the frame through the loom as the head bearings are poor conductors (check the casquette ground wire).

The neutral switch has a ground wire and a wire from the clutch switch which branches to a wire to the neutral lamp, and may branch to a third wire.

The neutral lamp has a live feed and a wire to ground it which illuminates it via the neutral switch.
