I've just bought an 08 elecrta x that has been used as a daily commuter, the exhaust nuts are pretty rusty, I've been spraying them with penetrating oil getting the engine hot and trying to move them.... gently.... I have some movement on both of them but the nuts are rusted solid so the studs are unscrewing, they move ok now but want to replace them, what size thread is in the cylinder head ? thanks in advance

Why do you need to know? The correct spares will fit.

well, I have a lathe and will probably make some that are better than the spares, i'll alter them slightly too, I've not unscrewed them all the way yet, and won't until I fit a new exhaust, studs like this normally have a coarse thread into the alloy, are they metric ??

No harm in asking what thread is used (why shouldn't we know?), it's 8mm metric (coarse). I kept the original studs but replaced the cheap plated OEM nuts with flanged stainless steel nuts and a bit of copper grease on the threads.

the on-line parts book tells me - and anyone else who cares to look! - that they are M8 x 40mm.

Andyo, you should get yourself a thread gauge then all will be revealed.

I have a thread gauge but haven't taken the studs out , just got them moving, they are badly corroded, i'll knock some up ready for when I change my pipe, that's all..... and Presto, the answers to life the universe and everything lies somewhere on the internet but if everyone took that route there would be nobody for you to feel superior over on your forum, you're welcome Adrian... thank you

Trouble is, without having one to hand, lengths of the two end of the threaded part of the stud may be difficult to estimate.
Perhaps it would be better to remove one to check, and inspect the condition of female thread at the same time?
