To initially position the AA unit so that the timing will be close enough to be nearly almost in the right place first time:

Piston at TDC on compression stroke. Double check and then double check again, and then for a third time as finding and precisely locating TRUE TDC is not easy!

Position AA unit in points housing so that the two pivots that the Advance bob weights swing on are aligned vertically with the two holes in the housing the pillar bolts screw into.

Obviously you can position the AA unit 180 'out' so double check the arrangement of the points cam to the heel of the points...

The points should JUST have opened (fag paper slips out).

And that is the rough and ready easy guide to nearly almost positioning the AA unit in the right spot. All you should need to then do is maybe move the points plate a wee bit one way of the other...

Oops, forget to answer the removal question: remove AA units central bolt, put Phillips screw driver into center of AA unit from whence you removed the bolt, rap screwdriver handle with hammer. AA unit is shocked loose. :-)
Or buy the extractor tool...
