Does anyone know when valve clearances should be checked and adjusted on an EFI Woodsman/Electra? Cant see anything in the owners manual that came with the bike when new.

I think I'm right that EFI engines have hydraulic tappets so no need to adjust.

Yes, they are auto adjusting, same with primary chain tensioner.



Weren't you going to sell it? I guess your bullet won the battle then?

The EFIs have hydraulic tappets, autoadjusting based on oil pressure... so use the right oil! No adjustment necessary. However, the exhaust cam has an autodecompressor on/in it which lifts the exhaust valve a little when RPM is very low (i.e. on starting and on stopping the engine)... if this sticks, which is possible, then it will appear as a valve clearance/compression issue. However, all that is needed is a wee clean up of the exhaust side cam.

Thanks guys - I should have known but my brain was thinking of the 04 4 speed classic when I posed the question, must be an age thing. Scaly - I was hacked off with sprag failure but now it is sorted and I have 1300 miles on the clock, it has loosened up and hammers along - aided and abetted by my throttle hand. Great on the twisties and for commuting - long straight are OK up to a point but on balance pleased I bought it. It may, however, get dumped in favour of a Guzzi V7 Racer or derivative - looking at the reviews and the peak torque point got me interested. Torque max at 2800 revs is 3000 revs below the Hinckley bonnie.
