Bertie's centre stand does not return very well, it has a new spring but the stand is quite rusty, so I'm guessing the shaft it swivels on is rusting up, please can someone tell me how to remove the whole stand...Thanks.

Just remove the springs and split pins and the spindle should slide out.

Have removed the centre stand now, the shaft is in remarkably good condition with no rust, but it was stuck to the stand with a gungy mixture of dried grease and grit, have now cleaned it all up and tapped one of the split pin holes so a long bolt goes through it with a nut on the other end, there are 2 handy bolt heads that the new bolt sits between stopping the shaft swivelling and wearing out the holes in the frame, just like the example given by Pete F, thankfully the frame is not worn. Just waiting for my tray of assorted grease nipples from that popular auction site we all hate so much. what I need now is some really hard wearing paint as the outer stand is quite rusty, the so called hard wearing metal paint I used before has lasted all of 6 months, anyone got any ideas ???

Hammerite works if the prep is good. Sadly it's not as good as it used to be as the H&S mafia has made them make it "safer"

Peter there is another cause for products that were once good to be not as good now, companies get taken over and the beancounters work out what they can remove from the product that will save money and it takes some time for the customer to discover the product isn't as good as it used to be, but by that time the beancounter has had a big pat on the back, moved on and couldn't give a toss about a once good product becoming just like all the other rubbish out there

Some truth in that Norm. Hammerite used to be made by Finnigans but is now part of Imperial Chemicals. In the sixties it wasn't generally available in the shops and we used to get it mail order.
The big change, however, was the H&S boys stopped them using Xylene in the formula. It is pretty nasty stuff and was the reason you needed a special thinner. It was what made it a great paint though.
The thing with the old formula was to get your second cost on shortly after the first. If you left it to harden, subsequent coats would peel.
