Hi all, just to readdress something that was discussed a while back. Clydebank College, near Glasgow, is running a short evening course (12 weeks) on welding. It costs under 100 quid, and I know a few folks were discussing how to learn about welding a while back. Anyone in the Glasgow area keen? I think whether the course runs or not will depend on enrollments, I have just signed up. I will probably be more useful for my campervan than it will be for my Enfield...

well done Michael, learning to weld is very worth while any fool can get a run out of a mig but understanding what you are doing is even better i learnt gas welding brazing soldering and stick welding an eternity ago when mig was just becoming commercially available ,i then bought a mig around 2 years ago machine mart gas /no gas what a load of crap only good for exhausts and light work ,then i went on a course at a skills centre doing mig/mag welding i also did some tig welding i was very impressed and have been working as a welder fabricator since ,i have just bought a good mig ,an oxford £600 worth made in the uk, all i need now is some mig5 gas and i,m away fabricating in the garage to my hearts content atb paul

Well worth doing. I hope they go into a bit of theory as it's important to understand what is going on. There's books and books of welding theory but the basics are useful. The actual welding is just a question of practice (and proper preparation) but you'll progress faster with an expert on hand. I did a course in the eighties and it was invaluable. Depends on how much/type of welding you're doing but you don't need to spend £600 to be able to weld up the odd bracket and such. If you're doing a lot of welding however, you will get frustrated with the cheap ones.

Mainly I will need to weld up the bits that fall off my campervan!!! That includes patching up the floor, but also will eventually include replacing panels - the floor doesn't concern me too much as nobody sees it... the panels however. I hope we cover the stuff I need, and I am sneakily hoping we can use a hole or two in my van floor as a demonstration piece :)

Let me know if you are interested and want any details. It is easy enough to find on a search on the college website. am looking forward to it - I really hope they get enough numbers to run it.

HI PAUL --------- the tanks I worked on at MoD Donnington had Chobham Armour and Anti-Spall lining...How does your "Chicken-Kiev" flat twin compare then ??...........Why not fit some Reactive Armour ?? ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactive_armour )-------- Will it need ANY welding at all ?? That's the token welding question just to keep us "on-thread"...........
