Hi,

I am new to these Royal Enfields and so far having alot of fun. They are a bit different to my normal bikes which consist of a Ducati, Moto Guzzi and Laverda but I think we have start a love affair which will continue.

I do have a question.

When I pull away for a stand still hard the kick start rotates around and points to the floor, once I change gear and the power is released the kick start returns to it's normal place. Is this normal or do I have a problem? there is no noise or off putting sounds it just does it.

Thanks Eddie.

Hi,

Sorry I missed out that the bike is a 2004 Bullet 500.

Thanks.

Not normal, not sure but maybe the return spring needs changing

Eddie, A lot of them do this but they're not supposed to. The RHS of the gearbox layshaft runs inside the kickstart spindle (The KS spindle is the layshaft bush) When you set off in first there is a lot of torque on this bush and it can revolve against the pressure of the KS return spring. It indicates that the bush is worn. This should be replaced before the layshaft starts to wear as well. In other gears the torque isn't as high on the bush so the symptom doesn't occur. It could also be that someone has not replaced the KS return spring properly so there is insufficient resistance to the KS spindle revolving. Either way, not a difficult job as long as the layshaft is OK.

The fact it returns means the spring is ok, my guess is there is a problem with the layshaft bush in the rear of the kick starter. Not sure what, but that is about all it can be

Oh, and there's a tech. note on here (LHS of page) on how to replace the kickstart pawl. This cover all you need to know to replace the KS spindle.

Hi guys---------- loved that first sentence..I muttered to myself}-- "it won't last" !!.......But HEY !!.. that's just the old cynic in me !!------------My 2005 does exactly the same, so don't be unduly worried...PETE F is technically correct and you would do well to consider it as a "Winter Project" (There'll be quite a few of those in the years to come, I suspect..LoL. ) but at the same time you can still put a few chilly miles on the clock .....

----------forgot to say}---- notice how the Albion box has similar traits to the Guzzi ones ??---- "Neutral" is not only a political stance, or a shade of paint ---- but in our case it's a way of life !!

---And as it's almost Christmas and party time, try this song ( to the tune HOKEY KOKEY, and apologies to all )------ YOU PULL YOUR RIGHT FOOT UP....YOUR PUSH RIGHT FOOT DOWN........UP/DOWN!!......UP/DOWN !!...... SHAKE IT ALL AROUND, YOU OPEN UP THE THROTTLE AND RELEASE THAT CLUTCH----------------------AND STILL NOTHING COMES OUT !!! ---------------------- OH!,OH!,OH!,OH, MY BLOOMIN BULLET,...OH!MY BLOOMIN BULLET!......OH!, MY BLOOMIN BULLET........................AN THAT'S WOT IT'S ALL ABAHT !!!...........Second verse, same as the first..... As Fred Dibnah would have said }--- "Did you like that?"....."I'll give you a Demon Stration if you want" ??
