Could anyone help please with the correct torque settings for the nuts on the front engine plates - 500 Classic Year 2000? There are three small 1/4 Whitworth, and one large one (something like 21mm). I do have a manual of sorts but the settings given seem very dubious. Cheers all. Tony.

Just compare with the torque tables for standard threads and use the lowest value between them for peace of mind.

Thanks Neddy. I decided to go with the 'book' settings of 277 ins-lbs (23 ft-lbs) for the 1/4 ones (which are actually 1/2 AF. I should have guessed they'd be made of green cheese as the first one stripped well before anywhere near this. I have tightened the others 'spanner tight' until I can get hold of some decent ones. They form the crankcase bolts and I would have thought they'd be made of sterner stuff! Tony.

23 lbs, you would have to be joking, no wonder they strip, not the bolts fault

Norm - that's why I was sceptical and put the request for advice on here, But as there were no takers on offer I went with the workshop manual. Should have know better than to trust that bl#+2dy comic!!!

Tony, just tight with ring spanners is fine without straining on them

Somebody is getting their ft-lbs and inch-lbs confused. Dependent upon the type of steel used then a torque of around 8.75 lbf.ft should be OK for 1/4 dia threads using steel bolts. Remember that if you apply Loctite it will stop them vibrating loose BUT when wet it may cause you to overtighten due to the reduction in friction. HTH.

----------- then of course there's "steel" and High Tensile Steel ------ I WONDER just which one our illustrious "manufacturers" used ??..........Might as well go to B & Q !!

Hi Alan. There would be no need for high tensile bolts here as they are not under any load. Whilst you can certainly tighten HT bolts to about 10lbf.ft there is no need to tighten them any more than plain steel bolts if they have been used in this instance.. You knew that though.
