It arrived today after only a week. Thanks Mr. H. Great service.


Now then. The stiffener is somewhat smaller that I thought it would be and it comes with a delightful set of instructions. I'm sure I can fit it accordingly.. but...

..before I start tearing Thumper to bits with my usual devil-may-care, cavalier attitude and somewhat childish enthusiasm for all things mechanical, I have noted that this stiffener was developed by the some of the good folks on this forum. That means that some of you have fitted them.


So.. any advice before I grab the spanners and screw the whole shooting match up..? Anything I need to be extra aware of..?

Or is it as straightforward as the instructions say?

I've fitted one of these to my Lightning. There's only one fiddly bit. That's lining up the threaded hole on the stiffener to the (now drilled out threaded hole) on the outer cover. What I did was to screw up the bolt on the stiffener, but not tight. I then added to outer cover and with a screwdriver, moved the stiffener so the holes lined up. Then I added the bolt through the outer cover to the stiffener. Job done!

I asked someone else to do it, they did it properly in double quick time, it cost me £20 and a few Lotto tickets and the fix works perfectly. I used the time saved to watch a film and brew a cup of strong tea.

Well Exile, those of us who made our own obviously didn't fit one of Mr M's version. However, having looked at the item I think Barry has summed up the only difficulty.

I found that the threaded hole was pretty much parallel with the ground so the same height as the fixing screw from the ground. That doesn't sound as clear as it looks in my head. However there are a number of links in this forum to a picture my prototype mounted in position so that should help.

Here it is may not quite as straight in a line as I remembered it bit if Mr H's version is made a similar size to mine 1" bar stock it sort of seemed to line up be default.

Hi Exile, Just a tip to add to Barry's advice after lining up the hole, refit the new screw and all the outer case screws, ONLY FINGER TIGHT at this point... Refit the neutral finder and tighten this first..ensure free movement up and down... Then tighten the casing screws fully.. Reason being surprisingly there could be a slight variation in the machining of the casings and if the neutral finder is not central to the hole then gear changing will become difficult... You'll be back on here asking What have i done wrong...? cheers gwilly.

Gwilly, I find that problem with the neutral finder not lining up properly every time I do a left to right conversion. I have to file the neutral finder hole out so that it doesn't bind up. Have to do another on in the next week or so to one I bought last week. I expect it to be the same

Hi Norm, Not surprising really is it.. Knowing where the castings are made and machined..HaHa Still its comforting to know this will be a thing of the past with the new automated production of the Conny GT... Just don't hold your breath...
