Hi guys------------ have just noticed this on the back of the instruction page in with my new AMAL stayUp float kit for Mk1 and Mk2 Concentric carbs.--they are discussing the changes that have been made to the depth of the machined recess in the float bowl for the pivot pin over the years, and I quote }----------1972 to present,}-- The 0.588" depth was modified in May 1972 to 0.579" .. In April 1974 an adjustment to the slots for the float spindle also lowered the float..The seating depth was further reduced 0.574" in May 1986, and has remained at that ever since.. IN THIS POSITION THE FUEL LEVEL IS CORRECT WHEN THE TOP SURFACE OF THE FLOAT IS PARALLEL WITH, AND JUST ABOVE, THE TOP OF THE FLOAT CHAMBER WHEN THE VALVE IS CLOSED..This position is also correct for the floats in the Mk2 series of cars..----------------------------- So any figures that give the 0.21" (plus or minus 0.040") are only applicable to pre-1986 made carbs.... I'll try to copy the leaflet and post it for all to view. PS--- the StayUp float is worth getting IMHO.

i was saying the same to the motherinlaw in bed this morning the stay up float is a worthwhile adaption i hope my newly purchased in november concentric has it fitted ,if not why not?atb paul.

Hi PAUL, ----------- nice to see you've taken up the "Diesel" challenge elsewhere, but still have some free time for this one as well (LoL!!).... I bought a 932 kit from our hosts a few months back (the white, plastic float was fitted in this--hence me buying the StayUp one),and I have just now got around to fitting it.. whilst a mate of mine bought a WASSELL 930 two weeks back and this had a StayUp in it as standard........As supplied to me, and having removed a perfectly serviceable Mikcarb, my Classic 500 was now reluctant to start, needing full choke and a LOT of flooding....when up to running temp all is OK but if you stop and try to re-start, it needs the tickle used before

Thanks Alan - that setting seems the same that's given in the 'technical notes' on the Mk1 Concentric on this site.

Hi guys ----------- Hello RICHARD R,---- yes,have just checked that now and it is on page 6...It seems almost a direct copy but the info is the same.....So for all you Concentric owners out there (and this includes the Mk2 as well ) you need to know the depth of the pivot needle cavity to get the float height setting OR fit the later bowl along with the StayUp float, and set to the current level, maybe ??

------------OH DEAR !!! BAD NEWS !!-----------this now means I have to go out into a C----O-----L-----D !!!!! garage and re-set the float. I've just realised that I used the earlier-type setting BEFORE I had read the back page of the notes----------- SERVES ME RIGHT for being a know-all....Come on lads, be honest now, who HASN'T got a Flat-Pack chest of drawers etc. (or Airfix kit)and started to assemble it WITHOUT reading those "girly" instructions first ??? --------------- It's a "Bloke" thing, eh ??...Soon it'll be :- re-wire/test the tree lights, carve the Turkey, de-ice the car, assemble/test(play) the kids presents, smile at the Mother-in-Law....all of which requires a certain type of courage ?? Hell it does !!! I'm off to the PUB.....

I've purchased 2 new Amal mk 1's in the last 6 years and neither would tickle.
Required considerable effort (trial and error)to reset float level to get them to tickle.Not
impressed.

Hi guys-------------- DOOM & GLOOM !!!!!!}----have re-set the StayUp float to those "new" settings and it FLOODS !!--In fact I can't see how the top of the float can be ABOVE the top of the float bowl as it must surely come into contact with the main body of the carb ??,or the bottom of the tickle plunger ??--so I've re-set to just below the top of the bowl and}----- it's a PIG to start !!No matter if it's cold or ho. If, having managed to start the engine, you now stop (by de-compressor) then immediately try to re-start( as if stalled at lights, etc) it takes a lot of flooding before it will fire up again---- feels to me like a fuel supply problem, but only when the engine is stationary eg float level. When running it's lovely with a steady idling and OK responses to the throttle----------------------it's just this DAMMED re-start that's making me wish I'd not bothered spending nearly £200 !!! --GRRRRRRRR....Will phone our hosts for tech. chat. Would the pilot jet being in the original screwed position and not the press-in bush have any effect on the carb's ability to draw fuel ??--JACK, what did you find then ??

on my concentric that I bought new, it would take a week to tickle, I ended up extending the end of the tickler by a mm and problem solved. I've done nearly 50,000ks on that carby now

hi alan i,m following this thread and hoping that when the feking electra x crank is done this week hopfully i have no bother with the new amal,i would have prefered a monoblock but our host does not offer it as a retro fit to the electra (didn,t like the concentric on the killer bantam!)sorry about the irish profanity atb paul.
