By Off to the shed again
#1263
Hi all, new user here! I have been lurking on the site for a while, getting up to speed with the Enfield world again after a LONG break. Anyway, the reason for this post is to ask if anybody has experience of what I am proposing to do, and if there are any foreseen problems from your collective wealth of experiance. I have a 1955 350 Bullet with a well worn engine, I also have a 2000 500 Indian engine/gearbox assy, NOS. Can anybody see any problems marrying the Indian engine into the 350 frame? There will be more questions as time and the rebuild progress!
Many thanks for any replies. I am in Devizes, Wilts, by the way.
Chris.

It should not be a problem at all. you may have fun getting exhaust brackets to line up and the odd thing like that, but otherwise it is a straight swap. Your biggest hurdle will be getting the DVLA to believe you when you come to get the log book changed. They usually ask for a report from the garage that did the work and a receipt for the engine. Never mind if you did the work yourself and already owned the engine, they will want to see a receipt and a letter from the garage. Stupid rigid officialdom at it's worst.

The dimensions of Indian 350/500 engines are the same as Redditch ones and its great how components manufactured 50 years apart and on different continents fit (ish). As Howards says, If you are using all Redditch engine plates then its a straight swap including gearbox. I have a 53 350 frame with a 99 500 engine which fits like a glove. Electrics wise could be a different matter, someone else needs to answer that. Good luck with the project.
