OK, then, Let's put it another way - as far as I know, no Matchless or AJS machines were made in India, hence there will probably not be boat loads of crappy Indian made piston rings kicking about for them. If I were to purchase a set of NOS piston rings for a Matchless G2 from a supplier holding new old stock parts for these machines, they would very likely be original BRITISH made, quality items. There would then be nothing to stop me fitting them to a Crusader, Bullet, Meteor or Meteor Minor etc [two sets obviously] and feeling safe in the knowledge that there are good piston rings in there.

IF the rings were that badly knackered and or incorrectly fitted (taper face?) then compression would be low, and in all probability it would be smoking like a Mexican bandit from start up? Was it?.

You can save your self a lot of work by doing a compression test and a leak-down test before you start ripping the top end apart again...

Tim the pistons are +10 thou but have had a couple of hones ( thats another story) , so they might go too far with another hone is what I am thinking. I have been avoiding fessing up on this but it was 35c on the last run and was pushing it a bit hard up a long hill. You know the rest. It got a bit nippy if you know what I mean. I clutched it and let the motor stop, left it a mnute and fired it up again. It seemed ok but Lifting the barrels is probably going to have to happen anyway. Happy days! Mike

Tim: compressions seems ok and no smoke on start up only the odd puff of smoke now and then on the open road at 60 to 70 mph.

Mike sounds about the same as this Inter, good compression, smokes a bit, not excessive and goes through oil, pisses me off but Paul might be onto something about dodgy rings. I think we will send the new set back to our host and get some locally made ones

Any piston that has 'grabbed' in the bore, no matter how quickly or lightly, will have scratched the bore and stuffed the ring faces...

Rings slowly rotate around the piston, so by now your rings will have assumed a sealing face akin to that of a cheese grater.

Any piston that has nipped will have suffered heat treatment degradation to the alloy, and the dims will no longer be the same as when fitted...

All of which can frequently be ignored around town, but not for high speed or long distance?

I know I know Tim but I am trying to pretend it didnt happen so I might potter around town for a while until I get enough enthusiasm to topend it again. I feel a loop frame Guzzi coming on I think I have had my fill of big twins for now.
thankyou all for your great input.
