As I understand it, a TLS brake has the leading edge of each shoe forced against the drum surface by its' own cam. In spite of the cams being moved in opposite directions, the BSA / Triumph conical TLS is just that - a twin leader and if Bert Hopwood and Doug Hele let them be described as such, that will do for me. TLS brake shoes should wear pretty evenly, if they are set up properly in the first place and not messed with. You are far more likely to find uneven wear on SLS brake shoes, due to the leading shoe being subjected to the servo action, while the trailing shoe gets an easier life, because it is just that, the trailing shoe.

The best type of drum brake is the double sided single leading shoe type. In that you have two leading shoes, one either side, and two trailing ones. Because you retain trailing shoes, the brake will hold the bike when stopped on a steep upward slope, especially loaded. Thats because the trailing shoes become leading ones in reverse.

Anyone who wants clarification regarding the Conical hub should read this, http://sumpmagazine.com/classic-bike-wo ... -brake.htm

Whilst I agree with Tim regarding the shoes being operated by diferent parts of the two cams, however anyone who knows these brakes would be aware that the pivot point of the two cams in the brakeplate are offset and they operate through a short pushrod to ensure that the same force is applied to both shoes.

Bloody hell this post has exploded into War and Peace, anyway it has become far to long for me to be bothered reading it all but as far as the lever setting goes, I've set the lever 1 spline past 90 degrees to the adjuster rod, don't know whether that's the factory setting but as the lever passes through the 90 degrees when the brake is applied I'm guessing it's ok, right or not it works.

Quite right Bertie, as "a Joe Average who does SFA miles a year" I am happy to have what works for me doing the puny annual few thousand I manage that admittedly are getting less as years advance.

Bertie, you have been around here long enough to realize that any question about front brakes, sprags, big ends, oil pumps, oil, tyre pressure etc will send this forum into a meltdown

Yes, but if it prompts you enough to write a reponse it must interest you somewhat. I like these it's where I learn the most - even if it's what's wrong with what you thought was correct.
One further thought, if there is only one set up with TLS brakes that is correct - why are they adjustable?
