the digital version of the boyer will compensate the slack to a certain degree(*).

when there’s to much slack, this needs to be adressed first.

i have always a couple of idler pinions and distributor pinions on hand to mach the best ones up.

cause lets face it, the indian way of manufacturing isn’t in the highest level of quality and continuity.

the mk IV is less performant in this mater.

included is this maintenance schedule for an SR1, so to give you a better idea of the howe and what.

The digital ignition is interesting, but in the absence of a battery, will the alternator chuck out enough power at kick-starting speeds to make it work? A.

I fitted a self generating crank driven electronic ignition to a 500 Fury, to give precise ignition timing, although kick starting could be a bit of a workout. To overcome this, I fitted a Lucas SR1 magneto with a solid drive gear [fixed timing], with the timing set to 8 deg BTDC. The engine starts easier since fitting the magneto, so it is probably firing up on the SR1, then, as soon as this happens, the electronic ignition 'takes over' and the engine runs in the normal way using the latter. The magneto also helps keep that 'period look'. Regards, Paul.

Of course we have all been thinking SR1 magneto all this time, because that is what bolts straight on, but seeing B.W.'s Performance Classics Facebook page the other day reminds me that the Lucas N1 magneto with manual advance and retard could do the job. Assuming refurb costs for the SR1 and N1 are similar, it just needs a base plate and mounting straps (big cable ties???) for rather less than the cost of an auto a/r unit, leaving the original alternator with just the lights to worry about. Just a thought.

WJS, if you haven't given up in despair by now, the Electrex World kit with a 35/35W 12V H4 headlamp bulb still looks like your best bet!

Thanks for comprehensive advice on this subject all. On the basis that I am looking to achieve reliability, durability, minimal cabling and moving parts I have ordered the Electrex Kit. I agree that rebuilding a period machine would warrant a magneto but as I am not I am happy to take advantage of the light weight and minimalism of the kit.
Looking forward to fitting it. I will post a review of the process and results on here if I get chance.
