Just to save any confusion and the chance of a bo**ocking, in an earlier post the resistance reading should read 4.7k and 2.8k, not 47k and 28k sorry, will now go and eat some humble pie.

I think the idea of drilling two holes in the sproket for a puller is the go. Sprokets arent that hard and a couple of 3/8 studs tapped in would make good mounting for a one off puller.

Just to add sadly that Dave Fisher has now retired and he will not take any more mags on and just wants to finish the ones he has left...Such a pity as he was such a friendly helpful bloke to chat with on the phone...sold me an old armature so I could replace the broken one...will need refurbishing though....As for the broken shaft I have managed to repair it myself after dismantling it and must thank Dennis C for inspiring me to do it...like he told me...once you have dismantled one it really is quite easy...Thanks all again....Les

Sorry to hear that Les, I'll have to find someone else for my rebuilds! I knew it was coming but there you go. By the way, have you got a replacement mag sprocket yet?

Les, that is indeed bad news about Dave retiring as good magneto rebuilders are very thin on the ground, pleased I encouraged you to have a go at the damaged drive end though, incidentally what bid you find to be the problem?.

For Lucas mag rebuilds I would suggest that you go to Tony Cooper in Halesowen. He rebuilds, tests on his premises, and offers a 3 year guarantee which he will honour even if you sell the bike in that period. His work is absolutely first class, and it is worth noting that he actually supplies many of the parts to other Mag builders as he took the trouble to buy the original tooling, and to have new tooling laid down. No fancy web site for Tonmy but his telephone number is on the web if you Google his name. Long term autojumblers may remember him, as he usually wore orange overalls and a top hat when manning his stall. HTH.

Mark...Re: replacement mag sprocket....Haven't got one yet but, but it looks like Mr H has new ones available, I will also need a new duplex chain as I had to split the old one, so will get that too.
Dennis....yes a real shame ...never had dealings with him before but talking on the phone to him he's a very friendly helpful bloke....I asked him what he was going to do with his business but he said he couldn't find anyone to take it up...you interested?
I have fixed the original broken shaft back onto the front brass end section by tapping the shaft with a M^ and bolting it from behind with an M^ bolt....also used strong (LMP 3% Ag) solder to reinforce the break...seems as strong as original so will rebuild mag with new capacitors as winding OK...obviously will replace bearings, seals, etc. too
Thanks Mike for recommending Tony Cooper, I had heard that Tony has an excellent reputation and also he supplies most of the others with sundry parts...
My last mag was re-wound by Dave Lindsley...supposedly he is rated, but he made a right mess on the outside of the armature metal work, leaving heavy gouging where he had gripped it with high pressure in a rogh jawed vice then filed it roughly up to clean it. When I sent it was immaculate with bright shiny brass ends and bright steel armature core...I was gutted and he just made excuse after excuse when I complained bitterly to him, he's also a very impatient brusk bloke to communicate with too....AVOID him if you care about your Mag...By comparison the mag I've stripped is unmarked and I don't have the luxury of all the right tools to separate the thing!..Les
