How about the grey wire disconnected on the back of the amp meter

Thanks Les, no that is not the same one I found, but is pretty much identical except on mine at the connector just before the tail light into which the green and grey go, the grey carries on to the bulb holder while the green changes to brown. Also has the connectors coloured in. I saved it as a PDF, not sure how to put it on here though.

To recap on the symptoms, because I have probably confused everyone including myself !.

Ameter & speedo instrument lights ok.
Pilot lights ok when switch is in park position.
Indicators work ok, front & back.
Tail light dead.
Brake light dead.

At the natural coloured coupler at the bottom right of the diagram, only the grey lights the test lamp. At the rear brake light switch, both the terminal to which the green goes and the one for the red/white light the test lamp without the pedal being depressed. Light dimmer on the red/white though.

Thanks for all the other suggestions chaps, I will check out all those points. Pretty sure the wires under the mudguard are ok, still clipped in there and no sign of chafing I can see. Really appreciate all the help by the way.

Tomo just a couple of thoughts, possible two problems.. You have proved power to the grey wire but the light only comes on if you add an earth wire to the holder..

So rear light needs an earth, either wire one in, or improve metal to metal connection..

If you have power to the green and red/white wire of the rear brake switch then i'm quite sure your problem lies with the front brake switch which usually fails to permanent on..
If you fix the earth you will find the brake light to be on without the pedal being pressed.. Disconnect the front switch and the green wire should go dead..

I'm also not sure if the green to brown connection is standard so check this connection for continuity from the connector to the rear bulb holder..

Take the rear stop tail bulb out then check if the green wire goes down to earth looking at the diagram I would say it should not without the bulb in, if it is it may be shorting sum ware a meter may be better for this type of fault finding

I reckon Gwilly's got it. Faulty front brake light switch and poor earth to rear light.

Eureka, problem solved !!. Well, turned out to be the rear light earth after all. What threw me though, was first time I rigged up a temporary earhwire to the bulb holder it was the brake light filament that lit up. Well, Scalyback was right, out of interest I ignored the pin positions on the bulb and put it in "wrong way round". Hey presto, the tail light came on. Still no brake light, so took out the front lever switch, pressed it a few times, then on came the stoplight. Put the switch back, tried the footbrake and the stoplight worked again. Now all I have to remember if I need to change the bulb, to ignore the pin positions cos the holder is wired the wrong way around !. Anyway, thanks for all the help everyone, really appreciate it Now just need to sort out the running problem, but I`m on more familiar territory there and pretty sure it just needs the needle moving up a notch or two, or maybe a larger main jet.

Or you could have one of those crap Indian globes that are wired internally back the front, only the Indians could do that
