Thanks for all the advice. The 1957 Model G now runs fine on an SR1 Magneto (which has no provision for advance retard).
I actually timed it by setting piston to 3/8 inch before tdc using an old spark plug. I knocked the ceramic bit out the middle fitted a bit of rod and marked it up as TDC and 3/8 inch before tdc. Screwed plug in and gently kicked it over to the right position. I then set he timing more accurately by removing the pinion below the magneto pinion. I turned the magneto pinion until I could feel the resistance of the spring as the points started to open.Then popped the other pinion back on and Bob is your dad's brother.
It now starts FIRST KICK and no kickback.I am a very happy man.
I waited a month for my dating certificate from REOC and now its all with DVLC for their decision.Should get an age related plate In the meantime I bought some 3.5 x 18 trials tyres (Ensign) from a firm I cant mention on this page near the New Forest who have an extensive car collection etc and they were delivered within 24 hours.
I will fit them along with new inner tubes and rim tapes this weekend then that is almost it.
