OOPS! was supposed to say...

Thanks guys, for looking things up, at least more of us now know about bullets that look 'Good for their age'.

That reply I made was to a question by Taper, who I seem to recall has posted recently. Is this his bike or is it a clone? I don't remember in detail the original thread referred to but I think it was another of these late Bullets masquerading as an early 60s bike. Should we be worried? Yes, because if the DVLA think there is a dodgy trade in cloned/fake Bullets they will be suspicious of the REOC's genuine Dating Records and we'll all have problems in the future! REgards, Mark

Mark,
Spot on, we have the same issues here with bikes 25 years and older, we have the best registration scheme going for these and it is a constant battle to keep the fakes out. Enfields are well known for this problem but some BM's are being fitted with earlier frames so they can slip through the net but not on the scale that Enfields are. Guzzi's are another possible contender but the numbers are so low I doubt it would be a problem. Our scrutineer, if he is unsure will ask other members to have a look to get their opinions as well. You fudge a BM across and you can save $600 a year in registration and get reduced insurance because you are a member of a club and the older a bike gets the lower the insurance even though the value of the bike is increasing

Norm, we see those Chiang Jiang (?) BMW copies here too. The thing they have in common with the fake Enfields is that the Owners have never done any research into the origins of the machine and loudly proclaim the authenticity of their bikes! I realise they've been duped but the refusal to do the "due requirement" (as they say in banking!) before purchase makes me despair.

Watching what we say...

The question is, is this Taper's old bike (which seems unlikely as many members helped him with problems with the engine via this forum) or more worryingly...

Did somebody read the posts, which gave details of a 1965 350cc bullet with it's frame number, etc. etc. etc. and steal the info to commit fraud?

Make you think twice wether to give out a frame number for a veteran bike, in the same way that many people like to obscure reg plates in photos.

It's a bit unlikely, but I would not want to find in years to come, that the DVLA are contacting me because they have 5 'Tornados' out there, wanting to be registered!

Mark, not that we have a problems with Chang Jiangs here, we have recently been trying to estimate how many are in Aus and the guess is about 100 and surprisingly many of the ones that are registered are on full registration. Funny in the similar way we see 1965 500 Enfields that were not produced in India till the eighties, we see 1975 Changs with the M1S OHV motor in them and in China this motor wasn't produced till 1986 but claimed to be genuine 1975 model. Classic I noticed today for sale is an EFI Enfield fitted with a Chang sidecar, heavy sidecar a Chang one is, poor little Enfield

The issue is with the 'Passing Off' as in pretending to sell a bike as one thing when it is clearly another. It amazes me that there is sufficient coin in the process to make it worthwhile but I do believe there are a couple of firms in India who make it a business model. My Bitsa is clearly that and as a consequence it is clearly unsaleable in any other guise. I'm pretty confident that I could sell it were I of a mind to for a good price on it's looks and performance without a string of lies. Its a special or a faux classic and I'm happy with that. Having spent the vast proportion of my working life in sales what I do know is that you are far more likely to get a sale at a good price when you describe an item honestly but for some people it isn't in the DNA.
