In the next post there are 3 links to pics

first one is the right hand toolbox (outside)

second one is inside of the toolbox

third one is the connectors from the alternator lead - as you can see the wiring has been done very well and I do trust this guy. Having said that I had had a couple of wires break in the past (eg wires to the coil)so nothing is foolproof I guess!

Wow. He's really altered that pretty radically and there are indeed two reg/rec units fitted. Presumably one of them is dealing with what would have been the AC circuit. I guess he didn't like the whole AC/DC setup.-----------------

Your bikes is a one-off, a neatly done one off but even so... Giving advice will be difficult.--------------

One thing you should be able to test "by remote control" as it were are the alternator windings. The wires coming off this are easy to find, they exit the top of the primary chaincase in a bundle. Follow this bundle and you should come to a clump of bullet terminals on the end of it (or possibly a connector block if he's re-done that too).

Let us know how many wires there are and what colour they are and we can take it from there. No point messing about checking the wiring if the alternator is shot.

Here's a video of me checking for a charging voltage on my 350 bullet. You'll notice how it changes with revs. I've connected into the wiring but you can do the exact same test by measuring volts between the battery positive and negative terminals.

Nice video. I have 5 wires coming from the alternator into the bullet connectors shown in the third picture: black/white, red, yellow, orange and green. I am new to this testing of circuitry and stuff, and have an old multimeter (not digital) so would welcome suggestions on how to use the thing, what settings to put it on, etc. Cheers gentlemen - you are helping me learn stuff I really ought have learned years ago.

Hi guys--------- oh gawd !!....have now looked at the photos and as others have said that certainly does look like there are two standard "regulator+rectifier" assy's in there. You say it's a 5-wire loom coming out of the primary chaincase ?? I wonder if he's fitted an uprated output stator and thought the max rating of 1 standard reg./rect. assy was below the new output so has fitted 2 ( either in parallel or series ) ?? I admit that's just clutching at straws but we really need that Wiring Diagram that he's supplied you with to be in with a fighting chance. Meantime lets start from the beginning and tell us what results you get from checking for any output at all from the generator. PS....... you mentioned earlier that ALL the switches, fuses, etc had been changed. So what switches ( ie what make or type) are fitted then ? Enfield or A.N.Other's.

-------------just managed to get one of those links to work at last. I see now quite what I was looking at in the Video. He's put the Ammeter in the cover of the L/H toolbox. Not the best of places for a delicate instrument ---- and how are you supposed to read that when on the move ?? PLUS--- the reg/rect. units are finned for a reason--- ie COOLING. There's little or none air flow in that set-up. Perhaps one of those units has burn out ?? They're not very robust in the normal set-up at the best of times. No ones' asked you this yet but is this a "Special" or a "Bobber"---that sort of thing ?? I see a skull emblem on there. Is there a bank of spot lights fitted on the front ?? Has the casquette been removed ?? I'm starting to think along those lines mentioned earlier that perhaps a new, standard wiring loom might not be a bad idea after all. If--or when---we get this fault remedied you will still have a glorious one-off fitted.

ALAN... Skulls, ya say? Skulls are Us! Can't get enough of them. Here is a link to a picture I took recently, although this is a very organic machine that changes and grows/shrinks as much as its owners frame of mind ******

http://tinypic.com/r/mt56p1/6 ***** this was before I put the SM58 microphone shield in the bellmouth.

This is how it was when it was first offered to me, sitting in a hallway in Spain ****** http://tinypic.com/r/15482sn/6 ****** Hopefully these links will work?

ALAN I did send you the wiring diagram from my work email address (maybe it went in your spam folder?) I can try to do this again.

Thanks again fellas, your advice and knowledge is appreciated.

Peter,
I'm going out on a limb here but with 5 wires coming from the primary I'm wondering if, seeing he has had a good fiddle, maybe he has fitted a pulse coil to the crank, that would take 2 wires and leave 3 for the alt. Only way to find out is pull the primary off and let us know
