If the bolts are left loose then what is it that prevents the lowest shoe from continually rubbing against the drum?

You don't leave them completely loose - just a bit of sliding friction to prevent what you've described.

You dont have to completely strip the brake plate assy to tighten the two internal locking nuts.


All that is required is a THIN spanner (11mm - 7/16" - 1/4") carefully slipped in between brake shoe and backing plate.


Enfield recommended the that the pivots be allowed to float for the front brake, but why not for the rear? Due to the leverage available at the rear brake arm it makes it far too easy to lock-up the brake (servo action), especially when on slick and slippery surfaces...


The original factory advised method of setting the rear brake shoes is fine, and when done correctly the rear brake should still be capable of being locked-up, with out excessive servo action grabbing the brake, and potentially spitting off the rider.
