A lot of smaller garages don't do this sort of work themselves but fetch in experts for removing broken studs/helicoiling/fitting inserts. These guys have ALL the tools and would quite sensibly charge £30 to visit and do an insert like this. (They would probably get it straight as well

You're right PeteF, I did a quick ring-round first and found the small garage in the next village did have all the tools whereas the big main dealers did not; there are different size taps available, the spark plug tap is rather long. A mobile mechanic may also be a good choice.

Hi, I have just bought a universal sump plug whatnot to get me through until I can find time and a space in the kitchen to drill out and tap my sump. No local garage seems to want to know.

Remembering back, when this happened to me, I decided to replace my sump bolt, not the strainer ones, with a decent magnetic bolt with holes in it so I could safety wire it. I decided on this--https://www.pro-bolt.com/titanium/ti-mo ... .html.M14x 1.25, if memory serves. Because the thread had stripped the original bolt would slip in and out barely touching the sides. This one,to my surprise and with not doing anything to the thread at all, tightened up real good. I haven't even safety wired it, it fits so well. A bit on the steep side though should last longer than the bike.

When my plug stripped I simply went up a size and put in a bigger plug. Borrow a corse tap grease the flutes and wind it in. Job done.
